Neglect

Neglect is a form of elder abuse which can often result in the older adult feeling isolated. The abuser may use threats and intimidation to control the victim. For example, the abuser may forbid the older adult from having visitors or from having a relationship with their grandchildren.

    What is neglect?

    Neglect can be intentional (active) or unintentional (passive) and occurs when a person who has care or custody of a dependent senior fails to meet his/her needs.

    What are some examples of neglect?

    Withholding or inadequate provision of physical requirements, such as food, housing, medicine, clothing or physical aids; inadequate hygiene; inadequate supervision/safety precautions; withholding medical services, including medications; over medicating; allowing a senior to live in unsanitary or poorly heated conditions; denying access to necessary services (e.g. homemaking, nursing, social work, etc.) or denial of a senior’s basic rights.

    Changes in hygiene including looking more dishevelled, untidy or dirty.
